Supporting ScholarMatch students in a post-affirmative action educational landscape
By ScholarMatch
ScholarMatch is deeply disappointed by the recent Supreme Court decision to abolish affirmative action in college admissions. We recognize the importance of affirmative action in creating opportunities for underrepresented students and promoting a more diverse and inclusive educational environment.
In our 10+ years of history, we have proudly served first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds, and we remain committed to our mission. We have witnessed the incredible resilience and resourcefulness of our students, who have overcome numerous barriers on their paths to college and beyond. We are confident that they will continue to thrive and succeed in the college admissions process, demonstrating their capabilities and strengths. Our commitment to supporting first-generation students as they navigate the college admissions process and their subsequent college years remains unwavering. As a community-based organization, we are redoubling our efforts to increase resources for the students we serve in the following manner:
1) Secure and increase funds that support our college access and persistence services to underserved, first-generation students from low-income backgrounds. The number one obstacle for many of these students is limited financial assistance.
2) Educate our students that working for the nonprofit and/or public sector is still a viable option to have their student loans forgiven. As a nonprofit organization, ScholarMatch is a public service, loan forgiveness-eligible organization.
3) Support and be a strong ally for all of our students, colleagues, and institutions that seek to contribute to a pluralistic community and a diverse student body.
While this decision poses new challenges, we firmly believe that colleges and universities will continue to recognize the achievements and contributions that our students bring to their campuses. We will continue to provide comprehensive support and guidance to ensure our students have the tools and opportunities to excel academically and personally. Together, we will transcend any barriers placed ahead of us, as we firmly believe in the potential of every first-generation college student to make a lasting impact in their higher education journey and beyond.
